An Old House
By WEI Yanlie

The wall has peeled off
The shadows sketched by the lamp light
A spider
Has enmeshed the past events left over the warmer end of the brick bed
The rusty door lock
Is oblivious of
What a key looked like

Summer Wind
By WEI  Yanlie

Breaking through night's
fence
Neighing
You blaze a trail at dawn
With your iron hoofs
Kicking up clouds of dust over eight hundred li
Like a steed unbridled
You gallop all by yourself and consequently are joined by a drove
Only to be intercepted by a shower

Harvesting Wheat
By WEI Yanlie

Men working outside as migrate workers in the village
Upon the crowing of cuckoos
Are all summoned to return
Sickles let go of a lot of worries
Having taken off its old garments
Wheat lies naked on thrashing grounds beside the village
Frogs sing antiphonal love songs around the pond
With a bark on the pillow at night
One falls asleep

Cities
By WEI Yanlie

Like a hungry tiger
Opening your bloody mouth
You have swallowed up
One village after another
Steel bars seem to be elongating and growing rampant on the earth
High-rise buildings
Like monuments
Have buried
A big pile of past events

Translated by NI Qinghang

Underground Railway
By WEI Yanlie

One bite at a time
You have eaten up
Darkness
Like an earthworm
You all by youself
Shuttle along the line drawn by destiny
And weave a net
With which you enmesh someone's soft smile hovering on her lips while she looks up
An occasional encounter has become something weighing on mind all your life

Father
By WEI Yanlie

A word with a stubbly beard
Wrestling with life
Like a soy bean
Germinates in bitter water
And grows into
What Father looks like
A coarse cloth cardigan
Fails to wrap up
Fate flimsier than a sheet of paper
Just a little squeeze
And a few tear drops will be shed

Translated by NI Qinghang
